Defense sparks Bryant White to season-opening win

NORTH LITTLE ROCK — O.J. Newborn scored 11 points and Catrell Wallace added 8 as the Bryant White Hornets eighth grade team of Bryant Middle School opened a tournament with a 30-11 win over the Cabot South Panthers.

The Hornets rushed out to an 8-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and held a 14-6 advantage at the half. It was 18-9 going into the fourth quarter.

“I was pleased with our ability to play defense with a lot of energy for four quarters,” said Bryant coach Vincent Newton. “That really gave us a great opportunity to pull away late in the game. That’s a testament to the hard work the boys put in leading up to the season. We have many things to improve on but the boys really played well.”

The Hornets will continue play in the tournament tonight at 7:45 against Lighthouse Carter at North Little Rock Middle School.
