Eighth-grade boys win, seventh-graders fall for Bryant White

Isaiah Kearney and Landyn Newburn combined for 23 points to lead the Bryant White Hornets eighth grade team of Bryant Middle School to a 47-20 win over the Sheridan Yellowjackets on Monday night.

In a seventh-grade game, Sheridan prevailed 37-33 with Bryant White struggling at the free-throw line, particularly in the second half.

In the eighth-grade contest, Kearney had 14 points and Newburn 9.

“I thought we came out and did a good job of attacking the basket,” said Hornets head coach John Harrison. “Landyn and Isaiah did a good job at driving the ball and finishing.

“Our press was effective and we got a good win,” he noted. “Newburn did a good job with handling the basketball. Cameron Boote and Caleb Carter did a good job defending the paint and rebounding.”

The Hornets improved to 4-2 on the season.

In the seventh-grade game, Cori Nichols led the Hornets with 15 points. Jalyn Russ added 8.

It was the first loss in three games for the Hornets.

“It was a very good Sheridan team,” said Harrison. “The key state of the night was free-throw shooting. We were 12 of 30 from the line with 15 of those misses in the second half.

“Cori showed a lot of toughness,” the coach mentioned. “Braylen Montgomery and Jordan Knox continued to be very aggressive and active on defense. Jalyn did a good job inside.

“This is a solid group and they are not used to losing and didn’t like it,” he added. “Hopefully, we come out tonight and play well against another solid program in Cabot.”
Both teams, along with the Lady Hornets, travel to Cabot North tonight.
