Foundation to provide mentoring program for girls

Hurt2Hope Foundation will hold a kickoff event on July 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Bishop Park in Bryant.

There will be face-painting, arts and crafts, refreshments and a meet and greet with H2H founder Anita Shavonta LaFlora of Bryant plus mentor/mentee sign-ups.

Hurt2Hope is designed to provide mentoring, career counseling, tutoring, family counseling (referral services), individual counseling (referral services), financial classes, self-esteem classes, education assistance, and team building.

“The mission of the Hurt to Hope Foundation is to mentor girls 7 to 17 from various cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds who have faced or will face many trials during the course of their lives,” said LaFlora, who recently accepted the position of Company Commander of HHC, 233rd RTI Arkansas Military Academy. “As program director, my goal is to instill in ‘our daughters’ their possibilities and provide reassurance in their times of troubles, knowing that no matter what they endure, the trials and tribulations are not who they are but will shape them into the ‘woman of greatness’ they are destined to become.”

LaFlora, who has served in the military for 18 years, holds an Associate Degree in General Studies and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. She plans on beginning work on her Master’s Degree this fall. She is currently employed at Pulaski County Youth Services.

“I’m a believer in Jesus Christ and a living witness of prayer changing things,” said LaFlora, the mother of four children. Her oldest is a Junior at UALR and three younger children attend school in the Bryant School District. “I believe each day brings a new challenge, however, the end result lies within your action or reaction. My mission in life is to continue to be strong, maintaining amazing values, which are bestowed on my children and everyone else in my life.

“I will never forget where I came from and where I will go in order to maintain positive relationships with family and true friends,” she added. “I find more peace within herself with each day that passes, looking inward using my heart to guide my desires and dreams, and my mind to pursue knowledge, which creates a balance and the ability to handle all of my obligations effectively.”
