Giving Tuesday is Dec. 2

While many are preparing for the rush of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, 10 Saline County nonprofits are planning for Giving Tuesday. On Dec. 2, these organizations will host an event at the Best Buy parking lot from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., to promote a unified effort of giving.

Taking place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving –#GivingTuesday aims to create a moment around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days that are synonymous with holiday shopping. For one day only on Dec. 2, community members and businesses can donate to the 10 participating charities that include: The Boys and Girls Club of Bryant, The Boys and Girls Club of Saline County, CASA of Saline County, Christian Community Care Clinic, Civitan Services, Habitat for Humanity of Saline County, Saline County Safe Haven, Saline Memorial Health Foundation, The Call and The Vine and The Branches.

“These 10 nonprofit organizations serve people—who are in a season of their lives in which they need assistance,” said Matt Brumley, Saline Memorial Foundation Director. “Giving Tuesday Saline allows us to raise awareness so that our community knows what resources are here to help the citizens of our county. It also provides our community with a chance to give one gift which will be effective in serving many.”

The national day of giving initiative began three years ago and was founded by 92nd Street Y with the support of the United Nations Foundation. The concept gained steam and now more than 10,000 organizations have joined the movement and are providing creative ways people can embrace #GivingTuesday and collaborate in their giving efforts.

“Giving Tuesday reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism,” said Karma Herzfeld, Habitat for Humanity Executive Director. “We all wanted to join together to raise awareness of the #GivingTuesday movement in our community with hopes that people take action by giving back to the charities and causes they support in Saline County.”

On Tuesday, Dec. 2, these organizations will be celebrating #GIvingTuesdaySaline and accepting donations at the Best Buy parking lot in Bryant from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. The community is invited to stop by for free hot dogs from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Christmas treats and pictures with Santa. Coin jars are set up at several businesses throughout Saline County and they will be collecting donations.  For a list of those businesses visit the Giving Tuesday Facebook page.
