The Bryant Hornets junior varsity team concluded its season on Monday night with a 5-3 win over[more] the Lake Hamilton Wolves. The Hornets wound up 13-6-2 for the year.
The win over Lake Hamilton came on the heels of an 8-1 victory at Cabot on Friday.
Against the Wolves, Chase Tucker had two doubles and three runs batted in and Blain Jackson contributed two hits in support of Devin Dupree and Wes Akers. Dupree, with four innings as the starter, picked up the win, scattering eight hits, walking one and fanning one. Akers took over in the fifth and, after allowing a run, closed it out for a save.
Bryant took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when, with Jackson doubled and courtesy runner Ty Harris scored on Tucker’s first two-bagger.
Lake Hamilton took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on five singles. With the bases loaded, Dupree induced a comebacker to the mound and he started a 1-2-3 doubleplay to get out of the jam.
The Hornets regained the advantage in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by Tucker. Akers, who had drawn a two-out walk, and Jackson, who followed with a single, scored on the play to make it 3-2.
Dupree worked around a two-out single in the top of the fourth and the Hornets padded their lead in the home half. Jason Hastings reached second when his grounder to short resulted in a wild throw to first to start the uprising. Austin Caldwell singled and Trey Breeding drew a walk to load the bases for Drew Tipton, who singled in a run. A passed ball allowed Caldwell to follow, making it 5-2.
A single, a groundout and a second hit produced Lake Hamilton’s run in the top of the fifth before Akers recorded a strikeout and got a fly to Tucker in center to end it.
The win over Cabot went four innings. Nate Rutherford and Harris split the work on the mound. Each allowed one hit. Cabot scored in the bottom of the fourth.
At the plate, Daniel Richards paced the Hornets with two hits. Jackson and Hastings each drove in three and Bryant benefited from seven walks.
The Hornets broke out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Tipton singled and Korey Thompson walked. Both advanced on a groundout by Akers then scored on a base hit by Jackson.
Rutherford gave up a one-out single in the bottom of the inning but the Hornets turned a doubleplay to end the frame.
A one-out walk to Tipton started Bryant’s four-run second. Thompson drew a free pass and Harris was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Jackson who picked up an RBI with a walk. Richards walked to force in another run and, with two out, Hastings singled in a pair to make it 6-0.
There were no base-runners for either team after that until the top of the fourth when, with one out, Jackson drew another free pass. Richards lined a single to right and courtesy runner Blaine Knight raced to third. Tucker doubled him home and Hastings delivered the final run with a sacrifice fly.
After retiring the side in order in the third, Harris issued both of his walked with one out in the home fourth a single brought home the run but, with runners at first and third, he ended it with a pair of strikeouts.
