Hornets, Wolves B teams split twinbill

The Bryant Hornets baseball team’s B squad saw its first action on Friday with a pair of games against the Lake Hamilton Wolves’ B team at Bryant High School Field. The result was a split with Lake Hamilton claiming a 4-2 win and the Hornets countering with a 10-0 victory.

Bryant was set to host Pine Bluff in a pair of games on Monday but the game was postponed. They’re set to make a return trip to Lake Hamilton on Thursday.

In the win, D.J. McKinney, Kyle Sahr and Jake East combined on the shutout. McKinney worked the first three innings of the six-inning contest. Sahr took over and carried it into the sixth before East relieved to close it out.

Offensively, East went 3 for 4 and scored twice. Weston Jones and McKinney each had two hits. Jones also walked and drove in a pair for runs. Jeff Hastings added a hit, a walk, a sacrifice bunt and two RBI’s.

“We had solid pitching from D.J., Kyle and Jake,” said Hornets assistant coach Travis Queck. “The offense put the ball in play and executed with runners in scoring position.”

In the opener, Beaux Bonvillain, Joey Cates and Boston Heil toed the slab. Bonvillain worked three frames then Cates reached the sixth before giving way to Heil for the final two outs.

Austin Kelly paced the offense with a single and a double in three trips to the plate. He drove in Logan Allen, who had walked, in the third. Jones singled in Kelly and went on to swipe two bases. Aaron Orender contributed a double.
