BENTON — Bryant Coach Debbie Clark has told her Lady Hornets they need to accomplish three of five things in order to win a game. Unfortunately, they only achieved one of them Tuesday and lost 6-2 to rival Benton at the Lady Panthers’ facility.
The five tasks Clark has stressed to the Lady Hornets (1-2, 0-1 6A/7A-South) are to score first, when the other team scores answer the runs, score with two outs, extend the lead and have a big inning. The only goal accomplished was answering runs one time.
“We came over and scouted them last Thursday,” Clark said. “We practiced then came over as a team and had a wonderful time if not one of our best as a team. We had great practices Friday and Monday and were prepared. I really thought we had a good chance to win.”
Benton started the game on a roll and scored two runs on three hits in the first frame. Finally in the fourth, Bryant answered with two runs of its own. Kaley Coppock started the inning with a double and two batters later Kayla Jolley singled and scored Coppock. Pitcher Jordan Williams also singled and was followed by Breanna Sanders’ fielder’s choice that scored Jolley.
That was all the runs the Lady Hornets would manage. Meanwhile, the Lady Panthers tallied four more runs in the bottom of the fifth for the final margin. They notched the runs on three hits and one error. All six runs were charged to Williams, and she relinquished the pitching duties to Jolley with one out in the fifth. Williams gave up the runs on five hits, walked one batter and struck out two. Jolley relinquished two hits.
Bryant picked up six hits with four of those in the fourth stanza. Jolley and Julie Ward were both 2-of-3 with two singles. The Lady Hornets were also guilty of three errors.
“We didn’t hit hard,” Clark said. “We also couldn’t get the leadoff on and with two outs you can’t bunt someone to the next base.”

What’s going on with Bryant these days? Better question might be, “Why are so many girls quitting the team?” Let’s look into that and we might find some answers.
