Lady Hornets prep for stretch drive against tough teams at Conway tourney

CONWAY — The Bryant Lady Hornets volleyball team got a chance to work on some things against some strong competition at the Conway Invitational Tournament on Saturday. And they hope it’s what they needed for a closing surge to the 2016 season and a trip to the 7A State Tournament.

Bryant plays a key match in that regard tonight at Cabot. The Lady Hornets finish play in the 7A-Central Conference at home against North Little Rock on Thursday then play at Conway against the Lady Cats on Tuesday, Oct. 18. After a non-conference match at Benton on Thursday, Oct. 20, the State Tournament begins on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

“We did okay,” said Lady Hornets coach Beth Solomon. “We had some ups and downs. Conway is always a tournament with good competition. We ended up in the bronze bracket but even the bronze bracket was really good competition.”

In pool play, the Lady Hornets lost to Jonesboro 20-25, 12-25 then were edged out by Hot Springs Lakeside, 23-25, 22-25. In bracket play, they ousted Jonesboro Westside, 25-15, 23-25, 15-7 but Siloam Springs eked out a 25-23, 27-25 win to end the day for the Lady Hornets.

For the day, freshman Lylah Washington had 32 kills and Ashlyn Lee finished with nine aces and 53 assists.

Raven Loveless added 19 kills and Sarah Clemmons had 16. Alex Dillard contributed eight kills, Lee three and Riley Hill two. Clemmons had 10 blocks and Loveless two.

Washington also had three service aces. Loveless and Clemmons had two each. Dillard and Hill pitched in with one each. Dillard led the team with three digs.
