Late outburst caps off opening win for Bryant at 8U Regional

MOBILE, Ala. — The Bryant All-Stars and the Clark County (Arkadelphia) traveled all the way to Mobile to play each other as they opened up pool play in the Cal Ripken 8-and-under Southwest Regional Tournament today.

Bryant broke open a close game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth and came away with a 7-0 win.

The Bryant team, coached by Josh Daves, includes Luke Andrews, Jonathan Carter, Cohen Chalmers, Grant Daves, Kolby Duncan, Dante Hernandez, Colt Martin, Dawson Martin, Barrett Royal, Jake Taylor, Chance Thompson and Chase Trimble.

The team was set to continue pool play this afternoon against Pascagoula, Miss., at 3 p.m. On Friday, Bryant plays Citronelle, Ala., at noon then Walker, La., on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Bracket play will commence Saturday evening and conclude on Sunday.

Chalmers, Thompson and Trimble each had two hits for Bryant. Trimble drove in two runs.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third. Trimble singled to left to start Bryant’s first uprising. Carter grounded into a force at second but Thompson laced a hit to left and when the throw from the outfield went awry, Carter scored. With Thompson at third, Andrews singled to make it 2-0.

Bryant’s game-breaking fifth started with hits from Chalmers and Dawson Martin. Hernandez’ grounder to second was misplayed loading the bases. Daves followed with a grounder to short that resulted in a force at third but Chalmers scored, making it 3-0.

Trimble’s double got Hernandez home then Thompson double added two runs, making it 6-0. Andrews reached on an error and Thompson raced home to set the final score.
