It's been quite a year for Shane Clancy.
The former Bryant Hornet football player took[more] the head coaching position at Bauxite High School after longtime Miners’ mentor Jon Watson retired from coaching. Clancy coached the Miners for the first time in the 7-4A Conference, a step up in classification with a league gauntlet that included perennial powers Pulaski Academy, Nashville, Ashdown, Pulaski Robinson and Pulaski Oak Grove. That took its toll on the team’s record.
Watson had been Bauxite's only head coach since 1990 and Clancy came in four years ago as his assistant, taking charge of the Junior Crushers as well as coaching the line for the high school team. This year was his first as a head coach.
"It's been an amazing year for me," Clancy said. "I got a new job and I got married.
"This is a great job," he said. "I've really enjoyed the kids and getting everything together. We're young and in a new conference. It was a tough year, but we've played some really good teams."
One of those was the Pulaski Academy Eagles in conference play at the Pit. The Eagles gave the Miners one of the worst defeats in school history, but Pulaski Academy went on to play Shiloh Christian for the state championship. The Miners wound up with only two victories, 42-21 over Carlisle and 49-19 over De Queen.
"Pulaski Academy is one of the best teams I've seen," Clancy said. "We gave good effort this season and we will get better."
Clancy asserts that the Miners will continue to improve in their new conference.
