Precautions for storms imperative

By Tracy Coppock

Safety precautions to take during a storm warning can not be[more] overlooked. Families need to be prepared for emergency situations.

According to Bryant assistant Fire Chief Brandon Futch, there are several things that can help prepare for severe weather. A survivor kit is always a good idea. A kit can include water, batteries, flashlight, radio, food, blanket, and a first aid kit. Another handy tool would be to have a NOAA radio available.

Futch’s advice is to “pay attention to the news.” In fact, Bryant has a code red system. This system sends alerts by text, email, or phone call if warnings are in the area. You can sign up at bryantfirerescue.net for such notifications.

During a storm while at home, it is best to be in the lower part of your house. “Put as many walls between you and the outside as possible and stay away from windows.” Futch said.

If not at home at the time of a storm, Futch said, “Try and get to the safest place as possible.”

An example would be a gas station off of the freeway or some place that would have a brick structure. Another option is to find a low level ditch and get out of the vehicle. Futch also said that getting under on overpass is not a safe place because “the wind intensifies” and a lot of debris could be flying around. Avoid downed power lines.

If camping, it would be best to leave the camper or tent and find shelter in the public restrooms.

Floods could be deadly as well. It is best to avoid high water at all cost. If you find yourself in a situation of flooding the best thing that you can do is call 911.

The advice from Futch is to “plan ahead and stay informed.”
