Southwest Regional Junior Legion tourney begins Friday morning at BHS field (bracket included)

Some of the best 17-and-under baseball teams in the region will be competing at Bryant[more] High School Field this weekend at the Junior American Legion Southwest Regional Tournament, including the Arkansas State champion Everett Black Sox of Bryant.

Teams from Paducah, Ky.; Atlanta, Texas; and Texarkana, Texas will join the Sox and the three of the other top teams at the Arkansas Junior State Tournament, Jacksonville Gwatney Chevrolet, Cabot Centennial Bank and the Little Rock Post 1 Vipers. (A team from Alabama was scheduled to compete as well but because it included 18-year-olds, it was ineligible so a team from Jonesboro has been invited to take its place.)

The first game will pit Jacksonville against one of the Texas teams at 9 a.m. on Friday. Two other games will be played Friday then a tournament banquet will be held at 7:30 p.m., in the Bryant Middle School cafeteria, featuring guest speaker Tom Pagnozzi, a former Arkansas Razorbacks and St. Louis Cardinals catcher.

Bryant will debut on Saturday morning at 9 against the other team from Texas. The Sox are 34-1 on the season after wrapping up the program’s first Junior State title on Tuesday with a 5-3 win over Gwatney.

Tickets are $6 for adults; $5 for seniors (55 and over) and $4 for students (16-and-under) and may be purchased at the gate.
