Vickers returns to busy Bryant Senior Activity Center

Fun should be the middle name of the Bryant Senior Activity Center located at[more] 6401 Boone Road at Bishop Park. There are many activities for adults 60 and over to participate in. Events range from a sit-down aerobics class to visiting casinos to offering meals for seniors that are house bound.

Director Mary Vickers returned to her position after a brief absence in a different job. She quickly realized, “This job is more important to me; it is just in my heart.”

The Center offers activities that are enjoyable and entertaining. Every Wednesday from 9 until 11:30 a.m., a live band performs. Also on Saturday nights from 7 until 9:30 p.m., there is a dance for which participation is encouraged. If dancing is not to a visitor’s liking, playing card games such as pinochle and bridge may be more of what they seek. Some of the other activities offered are Karaoke and trips to Branson.

More activities are also in the works. Vickers would like to see a computer class for seniors along with more day trips. The day trips include outings to local restaurants. “As we grow, I would like to see an active center as possible,” Vickers said.

Also, offered is transportation to and from the Center for Bryant residents. Seniors just call and ask for a ride and the Center tries to accommodate.

Meals are provided once a day to some home-bound seniors. The meals are prepared by the Benton Senior Adult Center. Currently, there are about 40 people that meals for lunch are provided. Volunteers in the community deliver the meals.

A health fair is on the schedule for April 12. The fair is where organizations gather to provide services to seniors including places like Saline Memorial Hospital to check blood pressure. There are other booths that will provide answers regarding physical therapy. The American Cancer Society will also be represented.

Fund-raisers are common in the Center. Recently an auction was held with donations from the community.

“We have to have fund-raisers, it is a must,” Vickers said. The auction was a success. “We had a great time.”

The Center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on most days. They are closed on Thursdays and Sundays and only open on Saturdays for the dance.

Admission is free, however a small donation of $2 per person is suggested. A list of activities is available upon request.

The Center is associated with the agency of Central Arkansas Development Council that oversees nine counties.
