Wood pitches first professional complete game shutout

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Bryant's Travis Wood pitched the first complete game shutout of his professional career on Sunday against the Jacksonville Suns as the Carolina Mudcats earned a 2-0 win.

The 22-year-old Wood, son of Jay and Dena Wood, struck out 11 without a walk and surrendered just three hits. He retired the last 17 batters he faced. In 107 pitches, he threw 75 strikes.

It's the most recent (and best) of a series of excellent performances by the left-hander who lowered his league-leading earned run average to a miniscule 1.22. His record is now 5-3 after he started the season 0-3 in a trio of games in which he allowed just two earned runs combined. Earlier in the season, he struggled with his control but has walked just one over his last three starts (22 innings).

Carolina is the AA affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds organization.

  1. Thanks for the update on Travis, Rob. This kind of info is an example of why we need a local news source in Bryant. No other Arkansas media source reported this, as far as I know.
