Wood wins again for Mudcats

Travis Wood notched his eighth straight win for the Carolina Mudcats who beat Jacksonville's Suns 7-0 in the Class AA Southern League tonight.

The former Bryant High School and American Legion star, who was drafted in the second round by the Cincinnati Reds in the June 2005 draft, had a stretch of over 20 scoreless innings snapped in his previous start, giving up three earned runs against Tennessee on June 18. His league-leading earned run average jumped from 1.22 to 1.36 as a result.

But he and the Mudcats earned the win and he started another scoreless streak that was extended by six innings against Jacksonville. He allowed just four hits, struck out three and walked two. His ERA fell back to 1.26.

During his scoreless streak, Wood was named the League's Pitcher of the Week. He's 8-3 overall this season with 78 strikeouts, 34 walks and 62 hits allowed over 92 1/3 innings. Opponents are hitting just .193 against him this season.
