Bethel eighth grade girls nearly knockoff Anthony; seventh grade wins

LITTLE ROCK — After suffering lopsided losses to the Anthony School Lady Lady Panthers previously — their only two setbacks so far this season — the Bryant Blue Lady Hornets eighth grade team of Bethel Middle School nearly turned the tables in a third meeting on Wednesday night at the Wildcat Shootout at Episcopal Collegiate.

But the Lady Panthers eked out a 16-13 win.

“We played great man defense,” noted Lady Hornets coach Derek McGrew. “The girls are starting to figure it out.”

Bethel trailed 6-5 after a quarter but led 7-6 at the half and 13-11 going into the final period.

“I was proud of their effort and hard work,” McGrew said of his team. “We get one more chance at them in January.”

Mary Catherine Selig led the Lady Hornets with 8 points. Lauren Burnett added 3 and Ashlyn Thompson 2.

In a seventh grade game, Bryant Blue nipped Episcopal, 18-17, to improve to 2-0.

It was 4-1 at the half and 10-4 going into the fourth quarter.

Cali Rogers accounted for 14 of the Lady Hornets’ points. Lauren Heath had 2 with Casey Welch and Jada Deaton connecting on a free throw apiece.

The Bethel eighth grade team is scheduled to play tonight against E-Stem to conclude play in the Shootout. Both teams take on Bryant White at Bryant Middle School on Thursday, Dec. 11.
