Blue girls win eighth grade game, White girls win seventh grade contest (updated)

In the basketball battle of Blue and White on Monday night, the Bryant Blue Lady Hornets of Bethel Middle School won the eighth grade game, 33-30, and the Bryant White Lady Hornets of Bryant Middle School won the seventh grade game, 19-13.[more]

The Bryant Blue eighth grade team includes Annamarie Blair, Isabella Bluemmel, Julie Brazil, Nikki Clay, Haley Dellis, Brittany Kelley, Mercedes Dillard, Yessenia Gasper, Katelyn Giffin, Emily Henson, Allison Hughes, Jamie Jamison, Rylee Phillips, Sadie Powers, and Dominque West.

The Bryant White eighth grade team includes Jayla Anderson, Lindsey Butler, Mallory Curry, Katie Davidson, Jerrica Gray, Haley Holliman, Destiny Hoffman, Colleen Johnson, Miranda Lawrence, Taylor Lindberg, Makayla Nguyen, Alexis Parsely, Briana Rutherford, Sarah Shepard and Abby Staton.

The Bryant White seventh grade team includes Lauren Allen, Faith Brown, Erica Crone, Skylar Davis, Hunter Delaney, Samantha Finney, Hailey Gentry, Jaela Hunter, Ashley Jimerson, Tristann Johnson, Sierra Jones, Alyssa Linam, Miranda Mayfield, Shayla McKissock, Carolyn Reeves, Hannah Shelby, Sharayah Wallace, Julianna Ward, and Lara White.

The Bryant Blue seventh grade team includes Emma Barnes, Bailey Boyles, Whitney Brown, Sarah Bullington, Amber Burt, Megan Curry, Monica Guyett, Anna Lowery, Jordan McKnight, Racheal Miller, Kara Moser, Annie Patton, Peyton Ramsey, Britney Sahlmann, Kendall Selig, Lilly Smith, Ashlyn Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor, and Anna Turpin.

In the eighth grade game, Bluemmell led Bryant Blue with 11 points. She also had three steals. Clay finished with 6 points and three steals and Jamison had 7 points and seven rebounds. Phillips collected 10 rebounds to go with her 5 points while Gaspar and Powers pitched in with 2 points each.

“Our eighth grade girls played extremely hard all night,” stated Blue coach Rhonda Hall. “They never panicked, never backed down and I was extremely proud of their effort.”

For Bryant White, Anderson led the way with 12 points including 4 of 8 from the free-throw line. She pulled down five rebounds. Lindberg finished with 9 points and 10 boards while Huffman scored 6 points and Johnson 1. Huffman also had three rebounds.

"We didn't play well in the first half," said White coach DeAnna Ward. "Our shots were off, we were a step behind on defense, and we got into foul trouble. We were down 10 points at half and came back and cut it down to 2 in the last minute of the game. The second half was better. We came to life and played like we should." 

The Bethel team broke out to an 11-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and held a 21-11 advantage at the half. It was 25-16 going into the fourth period.

In the seventh grade game, Bryant White held a 7-5 edge after a quarter and led 11-7 at the half. It was 12-9 going into the fourth quarter.

Davis led Bryant White with 10 points including 6 of 9 at the line. McKisson added 4, Julianna Ward and Lara White had 2 each.

"Faith Brown had 1 point, a crucial free throw in overtime," Coach Ward mentioned. "The girls did a great job defensively, putting a lot of pressure on the ball. We didn't press the third quarter hoping that we would be fresh to press in the fourth. They really stepped up in overtime and didn't panic. We were able to score a couple of quick points off of steals and Skylar had a great three-point play that sealed the lead." 

For Bryant Blue, Ramsey finished with 6 points, Taylor 4 and Moser 3.
