Bryant’s Wood may make Major League debut with Reds on Thursday at Wrigley

The Cincinnati Reds have optioned rookie right-handed starter Sam LeCure back to Louisville after an ineffective start on Saturday against Cleveland. In six starts, LeCure was 1-4 after being called up to replace the injured Homer Bailey.

This from the Cincinnati Enquirer:

Either Travis Wood or Matt Maloney has to be the guy for Thursday’s start against the Cubs in Wrigley.[more]

I’m guessing Wood.

Maloney pitched Saturday, so he’d be on regular rest. Wood pitched Friday, so he’d be getting an extra day of rest.

Wood has been exceptionally good over his last four starts. He’s 2-2 with a 0.63 ERA. He’s allowed 20 hits, walked five and struck out 32 in 28 2/3 innings over those starts.

Maloney’s numbers have not been as good. He’s 2-1 with a 5.29 ERA over his last three starts. He’s allowed 22 hits, walked four and struck out 10 over 17 innings in those starts.

It can’t be Sam LeCure because a player must spend at least 10 days in the minors after being optioned. The exception is in the case of an injury.

If Wood makes the start, it will be his major league debut.
