Conway tough against Bryant tennis team

CONWAY — A strong team from Conway, playing on its home court, swept all eight varsity tennis matches[more] against Bryant in a 7A/6A-Central Conference meeting on Thursday, Sept. 8.

Girls singles players Callie Hogancamp and Whitney Butler suffered their first defeats of the season. Hogancamp lost 4-8 to Alex Taylor and Butler fell to Leah Liner 2-8.

In boys singles, Conway’s Karthik Garimella edged Cade Howard, 8-6, while Robbie Powell prevailed over Bryant’s Nick Ross, 8-0.

In doubles, Bryant’s Kristen Dudley and Autumn Rouse suffered a 3-8 loss to Amy Bell and Morgan Cummings while Allie Hogancamp and Sara Lequieu were defeated by Conway’s Jenny Walls and Ashley Wofford, 0-8.

The boys number one doubles match went to Conway’s Kristian Lenser and Sam Roberts, 8-0, over Spencer Sullivan and Noah Hargis. At number two, Quilen Swain and Blake Bell topped Bryant’s Dalton Lane and Lane Ricardo, 8-3.

“Callie and Whitney may have suffered their first loss in singles competition but they played well against a tough Conway team,” stated Bryant coach Steve Wilson. “Cade also played well in his 6-8 loss.”

In other matches, the doubles team of Emma Patrick and Callie Hogancamp forged a victory over Conway’s Molly Evans and Courtney Gifford, 8-5. In girls singles matches, Conway swept four matches. Faith Guidery beat Erica Pounders; Courtney Gifford outlasted Dudley, 9-7; Beth Turner defeated Rouse, 8-2; and Meagan Langley downed Lequieu, 8-4.

The lone boys’ win for Bryant was a doubles match in which Lane and Ricardo came back to down Conway’s Jacob Farr and Will Morris, 8-3.

In other boys matches, Sullivan lost to Kyle Alexander, 1-8; Caleb Hixon and Noah Hargis lost to Bryant Edwards and Lincoln Reynolds, 2-8; and Ross and Hixon lost to Mat Evans and Jared Lambert 8-10.

The Bryant team was set to return to conference play today at Rebsamen Tennis Center against Little Rock Catholic and Mount St. Mary Academy.
