PINE BLUFF — Tyler Nelson and Tryce Schalchlin combined on a two-hitter over[more] five innings as the Bryant Hornets junior varsity team beat the Pine Bluff JV 9-1 on Monday night.
Blain Jackson and Ashton Green each had two hits and Tyler Green drove in a pair.
The Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning when Hayden Daniel reached second on an error, Ozzie Hurt singles and Wesley Akers delivered a sacrifice fly.
After Nelson worked around a two-out walk, the Hornets struck for three. Ashton Green and Schalchlin each singled. With Tyler Green at the plate, Ashton Green stole second, drawing an errant throw that enabled him to score. Tyler Green then proceeded to draw a walk and Braden Jones was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With one out, Hurt reached on an error which allowed Schalchlin and Tyler Green to score.
Pine Bluff managed a one-out single in the bottom of the second but Nelson fanned two.
In the top of the third, Akers singled up the middle and Jackson ground a single to left. After Daniel Richards bounced into a force at third, Evan Jobe, running for Jackson the Bryant catcher, stole third with Richards following up at second. Ashton Green picked up an RBI with a groundout then Schalchlin scored on a passed ball to make it 6-0. Jobe went back in to run for Schalchlin and scored when Tyler Green’s grounder to short to booted.
Schalchlin relieved in the bottom of the third and retired the side in order.
Daniel singled and came around to score in the top of the fourth. He took second on a groundout and, after Akers walked, came home on a base hit to left by Jackson to make it 8-0.
After Schalchlin worked around a two-out error, striking out a pair, the Hornets added a final run in the top of the fifth. Ashton Green singled to left and took second on an error. Tyler Green then doubled him home.
Pine Bluff’s lone run came in the bottom of the inning on a single, a hit batter, and a pair of walks.
The Bryant B team was set to play twice on Tuesday at North Little Rock. The JV team plays Thursday at home against Watson Chapel after the varsity contest which starts at 5.
