Sahlmann, Warner lead Lady Hornets past Pulaski Academy

Britney Sahlmann’s header in front of the net off a corner kick from Kendall Selig found the mark with 31:51 left in the game proved to be the lone score of the night as the Bryant Lady Hornets captured their second win in as many nights on Tuesday. The Pulaski Academy Lady Bruins, among the best teams in Class 5A and the state, absorbed the loss but put as much pressure on Bryant’s extraordinary defense as any team all season.

The Lady Bruins took six first-half shots and three more in the second half but could not score as Bryant recorded its 15th shutout of the season. Junior keeper Brittney Warner had six saves.

The Lady Hornets improved to 16-0-1 overall with the non-conference win. They close out the regular season with three crucial matches against fellow Class 7A members of the 7A/6A-Central Conference starting with Conway on Thursday and followed up with a trip to Van Buren on Tuesday, May 3, and a final home contest against Mount St. Mary Academy on Friday, May 6.

Bryant was coming off a hard-earned 3-0 win at Cabot on Monday.

“I’m glad they fought through it,” said Lady Hornets coach Julie Long. “Warner came up huge and played very well. That showed me we have to work on playing those tough teams back to back.

“PA was very good and physical and played a much different style,” she mentioned. “It took a long time for us to get adjusted to it.”

The Lady Hornets attempted 16 shots in the match but only five of those came inside the box including Sahlmann’s difference-maker.
