LITTLE ROCK — The Bryant Hornets soccer team scored three goals in the second half, including two by junior Jonathan Lowery, while shutting down the Episcopal Collegiate Wildcats on the way to a 4-1 win in its 2009 debut on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
Lowery snapped a 1-1 tie with about 20 minutes left to play off a feed from junior Marshawn Hood. Moments later, senior Jared Uland, off an assist from Marvin Lopez upped the score to 3-1. In short order, senior Aaron Prewitt got a direct kick to Lowery who headed it in to set the final score with 10 minutes to play.
Bryant got on the board first with around 20 minutes left in the first half on a goal by Lopez, a senior, with freshman Peter Alverio picking up the assist.[more]
The Bryant defense was solid, limiting Episcopal's shots on goal. The lone Wildcats' score came on a penalty kick with 13 minutes to go in the first half. Hornets' keeper Devin Norris had 10 saves.
"We had several chances in the first half," noted head coach Jason Hay. "We took eight shots on goal but over-shot high or wide.
"We started out slow in the first half but played a very good second half," he continued. "Once we scored the second goal, the kids became more confident and really started to get into sync. We had some kids step up when we needed a lift in the second half."
The coach mentioned Umland, Hood and Lowery in that regard, adding, "Alex Rowlan and Petey Alverio were also solid for their first varsity game as ninth graders. I thought the kids did a good job of being aggressive and playing hard for the first game of the year."
The Hornets will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 19, at Jacksonville when the Lady Hornets varsity will also make its debut starting at 5:30 p.m.
